THE REAL POWER OF MBD

In Events by ateworks1 Comment

SOLIDWORKS MBD is an integrated drawing-less manufacturing solution for SOLIDWORKS. It helps companies define, organize, and publish 3D Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) including 3D model data in industry standard file formats such as eDrawings® and 3D PDF. Unlike traditional 2D drawings, SOLIDWORKS MBD guides the manufacturing process directly in 3D, which helps streamline production, cut cycle time, reduce errors, and support industry standards such as Military-Standard-31000A, ASME Y14.41, ISO 16792, and DIN ISO 16792.

In one of the blog posted on The SOLIDWORKS Blog, it was mentioned that during SOLIDWORKS WORLD 2016 MBD roundtable discussion, Glenn Kuenzler with GE Lighting (now Current powered by GE) asked for a side-by-side time and cost comparison between 2D drawing and MBD approaches. The engineering community is looking for solid metrics to justify this paradigm shift and convince others in doubt. An independent and objective study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the U.S. made solid progress in this study: Testing the Digital Thread in Support of Model-Based Manufacturing and Inspection.

Part of MBD’s goal is to make all enable design details to be pushed to a robot, from the tolerances necessary to decide the correct manufacturing operations to the instructions to operate quality control robots (Coordinate Measuring Machines), eliminating the needs to rely on paper drawings to get things done.

During the initial step, Glenn also inferred that we would need to allow a preparation period while getting use to MBD. Just like how we require time get used to memorizing the key location to run our fingers through the keyboards effortlessly. The real power of MBD kicks in at downstream automations such as CAM, CMM, Tolerance Analysis, Quoting, and Process Planning.
